Carrier Oils are a necessary part of any aromatherapy treatment: All Essential Oils need to be diluted in a proper carrier oil before applying to the skin. Yes, I even suggest that Lavender and Tea Tree should be diluted in carrier oils before applying them.
Why?
Because I am personally aware of people who have very sensitive skin and have had a reaction even using gentle essential oils without a carrier base.
Which Carrier Oil Should I Choose?
There are many types of carrier oils to choose from when making up your aromatherapy treatments. The type you choose will be dependant on what you are trying to treat with your essential oil blend. If you are blending essential oils for perfume purposes then I generally recommend using Jojoba Oil as this has a long shelf life and won’t interefere with the smell of your essential oil blend.
If you are blending for a therapeutic blend then your carrier oil choices may be different. The thing that many people don’t understand is that when working with carrier oils, they each have their own specific properties, much like essential oils do. There is no “one size fits all” carrier oil that will do the trick in every situation. This is why it is so important to learn not only about the essential oils but also about the variety of carrier oils available to dilute your blends in. (Be sure to check out our page on Aromatherapy Dilution Rates before attempting to make your essential oil blends.)
If you are planning on making any aromatherapy skin care treatments you will need to know which carrier oils are best suited for the type of skin you are working with. Some are better for dry skin and others are better for oily skin. Acne solutions will be different than bruises on your legs or arms.
We always suggest that you take a good aromatherapy course so you will learn how to use the various essential oils and carrier oils properly and effectively. Of course, you are going to say that we say this so we can sell aromatherapy courses, but the truth is that besides the fact that we do, we do not push people to take aromatherapy courses with us.
Our true desire is that people find a good course taught by a Professional Aromatherapist they can trust and learn what needs to be learned to practice using essential oils safely and effectively.
Carrier Oils are a necessary part of any aromatherapy treatment so please take the time to take a course and learn what you need to know.
ALWAYS REFER TO AROMATHERAPY CONTRAINDICATIONS BEFORE MAKING ANY TREATMENT!
